Hidden in the heart of Knightsbridge, this project redefines London mews architecture through the lens of the modern retrofit. Once a humble service building, this mews property has been transformed into a refined family home; a sustainable, light-filled urban retreat that honours the past while embracing the future.
A LIGHT-FILLED RETROFIT
This was not a simple refurbishment but a carefully considered retrofit, designed to enhance the home’s energy efficiency, functionality, and sense of space. The layout was entirely reworked to maximise natural light, a rare feature in traditional mews houses. Skylights were introduced above the staircase, drawing daylight deep into the plan. Working in collaboration with lighting designer Viabizzuno, artificial lighting was integrated as both a practical and aesthetic feature, extending brightness and ambience throughout the home.

At the core of this mews house design in London lies a sculptural staircase, a unifying element connecting all three floors. This multi-purpose feature naturally divides space while opening up the interiors, creating fluid transitions between rooms. Built-in shelving along the staircase allows light to flow freely through each level, reinforcing the architectural intent of openness and connectivity.
flexible living through retrofit thinking
Retrofit architecture is about adaptation; making existing structures work harder, smarter, and more sustainably. Here, flexibility was key. The ground floor studio can be closed off with a sliding panel, providing privacy for work or guests. On the first floor, the kitchen hides behind a sliding wallpapered panel, maintaining a clean, minimalist aesthetic. A custom bookcase, integrated into the stair structure, delineates spaces without blocking light, ensuring the home feels spacious and connected.

With sensitive interventions, these compact homes can evolve into efficient, elegant urban dwellings that meet the needs of modern life while celebrating their historic fabric.
